Fresh off Te Araroa, three hikers (me, Nat and Sofie) set out from Wanaka for a 12-day route through the Southern Alps, looking for the elevation, isolation and risk the TA hadn’t quite given us. We averaged over 1,000m of climbing a day, linked Brewster Glacier, the Gillespie circuit, the Wilkin Valley, Waterfall Face, Rabbit Pass, the Matukituki, Cascade Saddle and the Rees, and finished in Queenstown.
